The Ounce of Prevention Fund
"We chose the name Ounce of Prevention Fund because we believe it's more caring and cost-effective to promote healthy child development than to treat problems later in life."
Founded in 1982, the Ounce of Prevention Fund remains committed to a bold vision where all children enter school ready to learn, grow and develop to their fullest potential. We are different from many in the early childhood field because we serve as a "laboratory" where the best theories are tested in real-world circumstances and then turned into best practices. In short, we do five basic things:
- develop and operate innovative community-based programs;
- use research and evaluation methods to better understand what works in helping young children and their families;
- provide extensive training to professionals who work with young children and their families;
- advocate for public policy changes that better serve all children and families; and
- promote and replicate our successful models.
We are committed to integrating all five aspects of our work to reach young children and their families in some of the most challenging communities in the nation. Our work starts with a good idea taken from our day-to-day experience or the most recent research literature. Then, we typically invest private dollars to launch an innovative project based on the good idea, evaluate and refine our work, advocate for change, and promote and encourage replication of the model.
Mission Statement
The Ounce of Prevention Fund invests in the healthy development of infants, children, adolescents and families through an innovative cycle of program implementation, research, training, policy analysis and advocacy in order to prevent physical, social and emotional problems later in life.
